Abstract

The first part of this paper looks at how creativity has been explored in writings in the field of translation studies. It examines the stages in creative translation and investigates the creative process. The second part of the paper looks at how creativity can be exploited in the translation class by concentrating in particular on the liberating role of intralingual and interlingual paraphrase, while considering the various constraints operating on the selection of the optimal target text.

Lance Hewson, Faculty of Translation and Interpreting University of Geneva, Switzerland

After having taught at the universities of Montpellier and Toulouse, Lance Hewson took up a professorship at the University of Geneva’s Faculty of Translation and Interpreting in 2002. He currently teaches both literary and pragmatic translation, and runsseminars on various aspects of Translation Studies. His most recent publications cover such subjects as translation criticism (An Approach to Translation Criticism. Emma and Madame Bovary in translation, 2011), untranslatability, creativity, explicitation and implicitation, equivalence and similarity, source and target orientation, and the question of the reader. He has also worked on the problems posed by the increasing use of English as a lingua franca, and is currently investigating future avenues of theoretical research in the light of the ever-increasing use of machine translation.
